A literature search for articles published between 1979 and 2017 using the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) “Pubmed” online database was conducted. The search results were summarized into 12 main criteria and transformed into fundamentals for subsequent clinical guidelines. The first part of the study focuses on treatment options, while the second part focuses on practical treatment processes illustrated by clinical case reports obtained from our institution.
The treatment options include an overview of digital treatment planning, digital treatment planning using a commercial software, 3D implant positioning, model-based treatment planning (freehand, semi-guided and fully guided), implant positioning in the aesthetic area and implant positioning in the molar area.
The procedure was studied for fully-guided implant placement, semi-guided implant placement with template-guided pilot drilling, freehand implant placement, digital treatment planning with fully-guided insertion using the protocol of an implant manufacturer, parallel-walled implants and conical implants. In order to illustrate the clinical implementation, images were provided by the University Clinic of Dentistry Vienna and the manufacturer of a digital implant planning software. Using this evidence-based approach, fundamentals for treatment guidelines were created and discussed.
